More Ranting...

In what is sure to become a common subject on the ole blog, I'll join Troy on the Bush Bashing. Its just too easy. It's too bad that we don't have a conservative and a liberal here to give a balanced debate, but unfortunately both Troy and I are intelligent people, and not rich, so no Republican fans here. All you've got is that Troy is a tad more redneck than I am.

As Canadians, we're in a strange spot. We understand American culture, because its so similar to our own. We see our own systems fail when they try to emulate their American equivalents. All we can do is listen to the speeches, watch the spin, and shake our heads. We have the same Freedoms as Americans (well, more actually), but although all terrorists and insurgents supposedly "hate the US for their freedom", you'll notice that no one hates Canada for ours. (And the astute amongst us will also remark that we vote on pieces of paper with pencils and know the results to our elections within hours.)

Anyway, the other day I was reading a conservative blog, and in the margins they were offering republican merchandise etc. One of the items was a t-shirt with "George Bush's America" written across the vast collection of red-states on the map. This kind of pisses me off. The Red-State vs. Blue State map has been spun into the image of the election, rather than the truth of a slim majority... maybe slimmer if black people were allowed to vote.

So George and Co. take that map and use it to say that their mandate has been approved, that they don't need to apologize for Iraq because the people showed their approval of the occupation. Just look how red that map is! When he said that, I couldn't believe it.

So, although many of you have probably seen this before, here are a few maps dependant on population rather than area. If you figure that blue California alone would be the world's fifth largest economy, you realize it has a few more voters than red Montana, for example.

So its not just Red states and Blue, just one big purple country.

First time caller...long time listener.

A couple of things. On the radio, some dude said that a 9/11 style attack on Canada is likely. According to said dude, it's a matter of when and where. The where being either the country itself or one of our "interests", which I assume is a consulate or some such. And, Osama did mention Canada in one of his "pirate radio" tapes (Vol 8 on K-Tel IIRC).

As for paper ballots...we only have 1/10th the population of the US making paper much easier. (SJ did employ electronic voting in the last election IIRC) However, isn't it funny that Americans are willing to trust their ca$h and bank information to the same company that they DISTRUST when it comes to electronic voting? -J

This is all true.
Although, when you use the 1/10th of the population argument, you have to qualitfy that by recognizing that there are also, presumably, ten times the polls and ten times the poll workers to count the votes in the States. Sure, if there was one poll worker in each country counting all the votes (what a job that would be), then counting american votes would take ten times as long. So, you do have to factor in the number of people simultaneously counting.

All that said, the smaller population does make it easier in Canada. That, and there's never anyone worth voting for anyway.

In terms of speed etc., I'm all for the electronic voting... but why is it that there is no way of generating a paper trail, no records generated... doesn't that seem a little sketchy? Why couldn't a non-partisan group have been hired to design the machines, or at least approve them? Lots of questions there, that's all. And if its still going to take forever to certify the votes, then someone should get their act together.

Oh yeah, and on the bit about Osama attacking Canada... You know, I would never say it was impossible, but it just doesn't seem likely to me. I meet a lot of people here in South East Asia who aren't fans of the USA, but I've never met anyone that didn't like Canada.

Where and when, true enough. But the bigger question would be Why? I would think it far more likely for an internal, domestic terrorist attack... a surly seperatist from Quebec, or a crotchety conservative from Alberta. Besides, if "the evil-doers" attacked Canada, they might risk us tightening our slip-shop borders, which would make it harder for them to then get through the slip-shod American borders.
